Good for me!
We went over to Mike’s sister’s place last night to be with the kids for Halloween. We also brought along the dogs, which was really fun!
Anyway, I am happy to report that I didn’t have one bit of Halloween candy last night! Wasn’t even tempted. I think it’s like when I quit smoking. All that chemically gross hydrogenated stuff just grosses me out now. The chocolate candy just doesn’t taste the same as when we were kids.
Okay case in point, I just tried looking on Hershey’s web site. I randomly chose the Almond Joy product. Hmm, how convenient, no ingredients are listed on the web site. In fact, I couldn’t find ingredients for any of the candy bars I checked.
I googled and found a 2007 post that listed the ingredients. Who knows if it’s even accurate now, almost 3 years later. If anything, it’s probably worse.
Corn syrup; sugar; coconut; vegetable oil (palm, shea, sunflower and/or safflower oil); almonds; chocolate; whey (milk); contains 2% or less of: nonfat milk; partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (soybean and palm oil); milk fat; salt; cocoa; soy lecithin; natural and artificial flavor; hydrolyzed milk protein; sodium metabisulfite and fulfur dioxide, to maintain freashness, caramel color.
Sorry, but this just grosses me out now! oils, sugar, corn syrup, and all the unpronounceable chemicals. Yuck. I am pretty sure this wasn’t what they made 20 years ago when it actually tasted like chocolate and coconut. ha!
And then there are the nutritional facts on this candy bar:
Total Calories 220
Calories from Fat 110
Total Fat 13 g 20%
Saturated Fat 8 g 40%
Sodium 50 mg 2%
Total Carbohydrate 26 g 9%
Dietary Fiber 2 g 8%
Sugars 20 g
Protein 2 g 4%
220 calories!? I would rather spend those calories on better chocolate choices!
Hmm, I checked on the Mars web site too. No ingredients. What are these companies trying to hide? Or is it just that the ingredients change so quickly, they can’t keep up.
Either way, I am glad I am not eating this garbage anymore. No, I can’t guarantee that I will never eat a “3 Musketeers” bar again, but I can tell you that I would rather have a healthier piece of chocolate like Green & Black!
